Cancer touches millions of lives around the world. Chances are good that every single one of us knows somebody who has had cancer in one form or another. A parent. A friend. Your co-worker. You. Treatment can be expensive, even with health insurance. That’s what the family of young Katie King found out when she was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma last August. They could use your help. Thankfully, the St James Men of Charity organized the Basking Ridge 5K for Katie. All proceeds directly help the family with Katie’s mounting medical bills.

Basking Ridge 5K for Katie
An extremely rare form of bone cancer, Ewing Sarcoma affects just 200 young people in the United States each year. Unfortunately for local 10-year-old Katie King, she became a member of this elite club last summer. The family set up the Katie King Foundation to raise money for the surgery to remove two tumors found on her spine as well as the chemotherapy and follow-up appointments needed to get Katie back to good health.
Being a huge lacrosse and soccer enthusiast, it seemed appropriate that the best way to honor her athletic personality was with something physical. Thus, the Basking Ridge 5K for Katie was created. Organizers encourage all participants to talk to their friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, church members, etc about Katie’s story. Then, ask them to sponsor your walk. Any amount will do. The top three fundraisers for this event receive a special one-on-one training session with New York Giant Eric Dorsey. Awards will also be handed out for the top three finishers in overall men and women as well as various age groups.
Registering for the Basking Ridge 5K for Katie
The Basking Ridge 5K for Katie has actually been broken down into two separate races: 5K (3.1 miles) and one mile. Prizes will only be handed out for those participating in the 5K. If you pre-register for the 5K by the end of business on May 7th, you pay just $20. After that, the price goes up $5 each. Can’t commit to the entire 5K? That’s fine. Register for the fun one-mile walk instead. It costs just $10 per person. You may register online by visiting the St James Men of Charity website here. Anyone interested in being a part of this event for little Katie King must register by May 15th. Make this a family affair and get all your loved ones involved!
