As a parent, we all want what’s best for our kids. We want them to be safe and grow up feeling confident and loved. For children with disabilities, this can be particularly difficult on many levels. Educating our children about acceptance and awareness of people with disabilities encourages them to be kind, loving, thoughtful members of society. When you participate in the Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K for Disability Awareness, you help raise money for programs that teach our children these things.

Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K for Disability Awareness
The Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K is actually two separate “races” in one: a 5K run/walk and a one-mile “health walk”. Feel like running or taking a brisk stroll around Mountain Park? Sign up for the 5K. Not quite up to the task of a longer course? Then join the one-mile walk. The shorter walk starts at 9:30 am, with the 5K beginning at 10 am. The overall top male and female finishers of the 5K win a cool trophy. Racers will be divided up into categories of five year age spans each (10 & under, 11-15, 16-20, 21 to 25, etc up to 80+). Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. To sign up, simply visit the Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K page here before the end of day on May 19th.
Can’t make it out to join the fun? You can still donate online here. All proceeds fund PEC’s community awareness programs.
Where the Proceeds Go
Money raised from the Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K provides local classrooms (3rd and 6th grade) with disability and awareness workshops. It also funds mentor training, tackles “wish list” classroom items for special education teachers, and provides workshops for parents of children with disabilities. Part of the proceeds helps fund recreational programs for our special needs kids as well. And, finally, a portion will be donated to the CareTrak program used for children and adults considered a higher risk of wandering away (individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down Syndrome, etc.).
If you can participate, sign up today to be a part of the Basking Ridge Run With Me 5K on May 20th. Even if you can’t physically make it to the event, you can still help those in need by donating online. Have you or someone you know benefited from any of the programs listed above? If so, please share your story in the comments below. We’d love to hear from you.
