Brick Academy BBQ
On September 15th, join historical society members as they throw a free Brick Academy BBQ in the parking lot on-site. Snack on hamburgers and hot dogs. Then, celebrate with birthday cake. Basking Ridge’s very own Cafe Racers perform their music live. Since the parking lot will be full of festivities, nearby Oak Street Elementary offered up their facilities for parking. The Historical Society plans on giving away tons of fun prizes to attendees throughout the afternoon as well. In case of rain, the Brick Academy BBQ says they’ll postpone the celebration until September 16th. So, keep an on the weather and dress accordingly. Usually, the academy only opens up to the public on Sundays. However, for the Brick Academy BBQ, guests may take a free tour of the facility at their leisure.
History of the Brick Academy
Built in 1809, the Brick Academy served many functions over the years including a municipal building, boys preparatory school, meeting hall and its original use as a one-room schoolhouse. In 1828, the Basking Ridge Brick Academy Company became officially incorporated. Currently, the main floor serves as a local history museum for all of the Somerset Hills area. The lower floor houses a research library focusing on local genealogical records, historical documents, photographs, and real estate information of the area’s earliest citizens. Catch a glimpse of what 19th-century schoolchildren experienced in the fully restored classroom on the top floor. Exhibits feature a history of what early education looked like in the Basking Ridge area as well as photographs of past usage of the academy and the renovation process.
Step back in time. Celebrate a bit of Basking Ridge’s history. Come to the Brick Academy BBQ for an afternoon of free, family-friendly fun.
