The end-of-year holiday season officially began with Halloween last week. In just three weeks, we celebrate Thanksgiving. Then, before you know it, Hanukkah (starts December 22nd), Christmas, and New Year’s Eve round out 2019’s festivities. These holidays usually mean visits with family. Some come from far and wide to spend time in our Basking Ridge homes. Before that happens, though, tackle these fall home maintenance tasks. That way, you’re ready for guests and Old Man Winter to arrive!
Fall Home Maintenance Tasks
Heating System & Insulation
As the colder weather sets in, we put our heating system to the test. Contact a local HVAC company to come out and check your heater’s functionality. Pretty soon, they’ll be booked up solid. So, contact them for a service appointment as soon as possible. PSE & G offers a WorryFree appliance protection plan that provides their customers service in case an appliance breaks down. They offer several different plans for one low monthly fee. Check them out online today. You don’t want to have to wait until Jack Frost comes nipping at your nose to find out that your system needs work. While they’re there, ask them to check out your insulation. If not insulated properly, your heater works overtime to warm things up inside. They can recommend various options to get your insulation up to snuff.
Check for Air Leaks
Check doors, windows, and electrical outlets (yes, I said electrical outlets) for air leaks. Replace worn caulking around windows. Make sure that no light shines through between your exterior door and its frame. If it does, that means that cold air can come in. Add trim or weatherstripping to seal it up tight. Consider installing a self-sealing threshold along the bottom of the door jamb.
Upgrade the Furniture
Are the springs showing through the mattress of your guest bed or pull-out couch? Is storage an issue? Has your furniture seen better days? Black Friday offers tons of great deals on mattresses and other furniture items to take care of these issues. However, why battle the crowds for deals? Many businesses offer special discounts right now. Then, your guests will be comfortable when they come for the holidays. Platform beds allow for extra storage of seasonal items, guests’ belongings, and Christmas presents you want to keep away from prying eyes.
Another good thing about the end of the year is that you’re sure to find great deals on appliances. Replace out-of-date washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens with more efficient ones. Energy-efficient models cost much less to operate, saving you money in the long run.
Finally, our trees already started shedding their leaves in preparation for winter. These clog up the gutters, making it harder for water to drain properly. This can cause a backup, creating the opportunity for roof leaks and damage. Before that happens, check your gutters and clear them of any debris.
