Poverty strikes every US community in one way or another. According to the US Census Bureau, 5.2% of Somerset County residents live in poverty. Yes, that’s well below the 12.7% national average. However, that also means that more than 17,000 people (including children) in our county alone struggle with things we tend to take for granted (like food and shelter). As you can imagine, back to school time adds even more stress to the family budget. Project First Class seeks to alleviate this stress. Right now, Somerset County seeks donations of school supplies for our children in need.
Project First Class Needs School Supplies
Back in 2005, the local chapter of the Commission on the Status of Women created Project First Class. At the beginning of the school year, teachers send students home with long lists of supplies they’ll need for the upcoming year. For families already struggling financially, this presents a problem. Teachers already reach into their pockets every year for classroom supplies. You can help both teachers and students by donating to Project First Class. All materials collected will be distributed to children whose families utilize the services of the Food Bank Network of Somerset County just before school starts in September.
Project First Class wants to help as many children in need as they possibly can. They’re looking for brand new school supplies. But they’ll also accept any gently used backpacks you’re not using anymore. For school supplies, they request donations of:
- 3-ring binders (1 1/2″ to 3″, please)
- Composition books
- Glue sticks
- Index Cards
- Loose-leaf lined paper (college and wide-ruled)
- Pencil cases (especially helpful if they fit inside the binders)
- Safety scissors
If you’d like to help out Project First Class, simply drop off your donations at the Somerset County Freeholders’ Office located on the third floor of 20 Grove St in Sommerville. Donations will be accepted during normal business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday) until August 3rd. Please email Stella Ayala for more information. Get your boy or girl scout troop involved. Talk to friends, family, and neighbors. Hit up your employer or fellow employees for a group donation. Everything helps and everyone is welcome. Thank you.
