Have you ever wanted to be more involved in our local political scene? Ever wondered what it takes to be a poll worker during election times? Somerset County needs election volunteers to help man the polling stations during all 2019 elections. Training is free and you will be paid for your time.
Somerset County Election Volunteers for 2019
The poll worker is a very important job during election time. After all, they’re responsible for making sure that every vote counts. Poll workers check credentials to ensure the voter is registered and eligible to vote in that election. They also answer any questions that may arise from registered voters. But this all requires special training for our election volunteers.
Somerset County provides training to anyone interested in becoming an election volunteer. In fact, classes start up in April and May to train volunteers for the upcoming election. Each volunteer receives $200 per Election Day for their services. Recently, the New Jersey legislature instated a law allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to participate as election volunteers. So, this is a great way to introduce your teenager to politics.
Election Volunteer Eligibility
To qualify as a volunteer poll worker, you must be a registered voter in Somerset County. For underage volunteers, you need to be a US citizen, a resident of the county, and have written permission from your parent/guardian and school representative to participate. You also must be able to read English, write legibly, perform basic math skills (addition and subtraction), and go through proper training. All volunteers may only work at polls within Somerset County.
Registration for Election Volunteer Training
If you’re interested in becoming one of the 2019 election volunteers for Somerset County, you’ll need to attend a training class. To register for the next training class, simply fill out their registration form. Then, mail it to the address at the top of the form or fax it to (908) 231-9465. If you have any questions, please contact the Somerset County Board of Elections at (908) 231-7086 or (908) 231-7089. Failure to attend a training class will result in a $50 reduction to your Election Day pay.
